Built in 1825, the Baldwin Buss Merino House is one of the most significant historic homes in downtown Hudson.

Designed by master builder Lemuel Porter, the house is a striking example of early Federal-style architecture and has long been recognized for its craftsmanship, elegance, and historical importance.

For nearly two centuries, the home was owned by just three families, the Baldwins, the Busses, and the Merinos, each playing an important role in Hudson’s growth and community life. From early merchants and civic leaders to multi-generation local business owners, the house remained a living part of the town’s story rather than a preserved relic.

Over time, preservationists and historians worked to ensure the home would not be lost to redevelopment. In 2020, Peg’s stepped in to secure the property and partner in its restoration, launching a multi-year effort to return the house to its former beauty while preparing it for meaningful use in the community.

Today, the Baldwin Buss Merino House is an integral part of Peg’s campus. It serves as a rotating space for public art exhibits, gatherings, and special events throughout the year, offering visitors a chance to experience both historic architecture and contemporary creativity in one place. Experiences change by season, and guests are encouraged to check the campus schedule to see what is currently on view.

Together with the main gallery, gardens, and foundation headquarters, the Baldwin Buss Merino House helps create a vibrant, welcoming campus where history, art, and community come together in support of Peg’s mission to improve the lives of people with serious mental illness.
